Band/Artist: YellowSecond

Album: “Altitude”

Label: Floodgate Records

Although this is the first time I’ve heard them, Altitude is actually the third album for YellowSecond. I’m upset that it’s taking me this long to find these guys. I really like this CD.

YellowSecond is composed of Scott Kerr on vocals, guitar and keys; Josh Hemingway on guitar and backing vocals; Andy Verdecchio on drums and Brett Bowden on bass. You might recognize Scott as a member of Five Iron Frenzy. They’re from the Denver Colorado area and have been together since 1999.

YellowSecond is an alt-rock band with a very radio-friendly sound. Fans of Weezer, Bleach and Fountains of Wayne will enjoy YellowSecond. I even heard a bit of A Room Full of Walter in a couple of songs on this CD, if you remember them from the mid 90’s.

YellowSecond isn’t as evangelistic as Scott’s previous band, Five Iron. Even though all the members are Christian, they are more focused on writing about life and its experiences. That does includes references to and songs about faith.

A couple of my favorite songs off the CD are “I Can Awake” and “Forget What You Heard.” Both of these songs are about life and its struggles. At least that is what I’m hearing in there. Both talk of the struggle and both talk of the hope of overcoming. YellowSecond’s writing if fairly poetic, so the meanings of their songs don’t always just jump out and hit you over the head. And these two aren’t any different.

I really like this group and plan on looking up their earlier releases. Again, if you’re into the alt-rock/emo type of sound, you’ll like these guys.
