Drillbit Taylor video The Mark of Cain release I’m always concerned about sophomore releases from groups who’ve had hugely successful debuts. One never knows what’s going to come out the second time around. Will they stick with what made the first successful? Will they try something new? One never knows. So where does Red’s second release come in? You’ll have to read on…
There are two versions of Innocence & Instinct
, a standard release of 10 tracks (which is what I have) and a Deluxe Edition with 4 extra tracks, Death of Me music video, photos and a couple of behind the scenes videos. The standard release was only available from the Amazon downloads section. Seems like they could have made the extra songs available for download as well though. But I digress.
Innocence & Instinct follows the theme of inner conflict, of fighting the war that goes on inside all people. The war of right and wrong, good and bad, of making the right decision or following our base nature. The album is deep and intense, flowing between a quiet tension to an aggressive onslaught of sound. Red pulls it off by pairing the hard edges with a background of strings (which you’ll remember from their first album). It works on every level and is a further play on the conflict theme. The album goes through lots of high and lows, building up to an almost raw rage at times and then dropping into moody orchestral melodies. The overall feeling of the album is a desperate intensity.
I’m having a hard time picking a favorite song, I really like them all. But I especially like Ordinary World, a Duran Duran cover. They do a great job with it and their arrangement fits nicely into the emotional feel of the rest of the album. I must confess to being a Duran Duran fan back in the 80’s. I also like Fight Inside
and Death of Me. Fight Inside has a bit of a Linkin Park feel to it. Death of Me really showcases their use of the strings in the song.
The album climaxes at the end with Take It All Away. The emotional struggle and conflicts culminate in a call to the One who can resolve the inner war, the One who can “take it all away.”
So, how does Red’s sophomore release compare to their first album, End of Silence? In my opinion, they’ve knocked it out of the park. It’s a brilliant release. I love how they weave the theme of conflict and personal turmoil throughout the lyrics and the music and then resolve it at the end. They tell a story. I can appreciate the work and inspiration that went into it. Again, it’s brilliant.
