“A Man Can Change His Stars” is the debut album of Mourning September from Floodgate Records. The band is Tony Chavez on vocals and guitars, Josh Tipton on guitars, David Walker on drums and Zack Tietsort on bass. They are based in Tulsa, Oklahoma and have opened for bands such as Blindside, Anberlin and Juliana Theory.

Mourning September formed in late 2001. The band was originally a side project for the guys as they were all involved in other bands at the time. As the band grew more serious about the group, a name was quickly thought up for a concert in September of 2001. Due to personal issues and the obvious world events of the time, Mourning September was thought up and it quickly stuck. They have been well received regionally and have a repetition as a very hard working band.

In general, the album is good. The songs are well written. The band is tight. The lyrics are honest and emotional. These guys are singing about what they know and believe. The topics range from worship, relationships and the death of a friend. The style is a little similar to Juliana Theory or Further Seems Forever.

“Glorietta”, the worship track, is one of my favorite songs off the CD. The other song I like is “Running”, a catchy tune about running from God. Both feature emotional lyrics, crunchy, grinding guitar work and a solid beat. Tony’s singing is one of the bands strong points. It has a sincere, emotional quality to it.

My only complaint is that “A Man Can Change His Stars” really doesn’t break any new ground here. It’s typical alt/emo rock. If you’re into that style, you’ll like the CD. I do give them credit for being straightforward about their faith on the CD. Each song touches on some aspect of their beliefs.

I expect that these guys will continue to grow and mature in their music as this is a solid first album. I look forward to more from them in the future.
