Band/Artist: Kutless
Album: “Sea of Faces”
Label: Bec Recordings
Sea of Faces is Kutless’ second album, following their successful first release, the self-titled Kutless. And by “successful first album”, I mean: Best selling new artist of 2002 (in only 6 months of selling time); 3 number one R and R Rock singles; 1 top 5 single that became the longest charting song in the history of the R and R CHR Christian chart; Total sales of 155,000 CDs to date on their self-titled debut release. Not bad for a first time Christian band.

The members of Kutless; Jon Micah Sumrall on vocals, James Mead on guitar, Ryan Shrout on guitar, Kyle Mitchell on drums and Kyle Zeigler on base. The band formed in August 2000 under the name Call Box at Warner Pacific College. The band was formed to play worship at the college during the freshman year of Ryan, Kyle and Jon (plus Jon’s brother). The band changed its name to Kutless in October of 2001, signed with Tooth and Nail that same month and started recording their first album with Aaron Sprinkle. Aaron also produced Sea of Faces.
While not quite as hard as their first release, Sea of Faces has enough energy to keep you moving. They have a bit more polish this time around and the music is pretty tight. The main thing I’ve noticed about Kutless is that their writing has matured a great deal, both in the lyric and music departments. The songs have a depth to them that nails you right between the eyes over and over. The style ranges from hard and fast (Not What You See, Treason) to rock ballads (Sea of Faces, Passion, It’s Like Me).
Like their first CD, Kutless doesn’t mince words when singing of their faith. It is at the forefront of every song. You can really hear in their music where they are at with God. The title track speaks of the love of God for each of us. Treason is about the struggle of maintaining your focus on your faith. Not What You See is about keeping yourself apart from popular culture’s leanings and being a servant to others. My favorite songs from the CD are Treason and Sea of Faces
Sea of Faces is honest and straightforward. Fans from the first CD won’t be disappointed. And it should add a few more fans as well. If you get a chance to see them in concert, go. They are known for doing great shows with lots of energy.
