Hawk Nelson is back with their latest CD titled “Hawk Nelson Is My Friend.” It follows on the heals of the rest of their successful releases “Smile, It’s The End Of The World,” “Letter To The President” and others. It follows in the same vein as before, upbeat, energetic pop-punk. And that’s a good thing. I like Hawk Nelson. A lot. And I’m certainly not disappointed in this release either.
A little Hawk Nelson background; the band is Jason Dunn, Lead Vocals; Daniel Biro, Bass guitar; Jonathan Steingard, Guitars; Skwid, Drums. They’ve been together since 2004, and took the Christian music world by storm. Oh and they hale from Ontario, Canada.
I’ve seen these guys in concert three times and one thing I noticed is that they are very approachable to the audience, both on and off stage. That friendliness carries over into their music, intentionally.
“Going into this record, we sat down and thought about how we’ve always had this mentality of not so much winning fans as making friends,” says born frontman Jason Dunn. “We want to be clear that we’re all about being on the same level as the audience.”
Dunn explains, “So many people are struggling today. Most of all they need a friend, and we believe everyone has a friend in God.”
The first single “Friend Like That” had quite a bit of airplay around these parts. It’s a Hawk Nelson song, fun and energetic and embodies the spirit of the CD. It’s a great tune and probably my favourite song on the album. On a slower note, “Arms Around Me” touches on social and spiritual issues of regret and forgiveness. It’s thankful for the friends who are near even during tough times.
So, to cap this off, this is one of the Hawk Nelson’s best. 5 out of 5 stars. Go get it. Now.
