Decyfer Down was a band that I had heard of, but hadn’t really listened to their music. Seeing that they had an EP out for their upcoming release “Crash,” I decided to give it a go and I’m blown away.
A little background first. Decyfer Down started out as an acoustic group in 1999 called “Allysonhymn.” Once all the current members were in place, they pumped up their sound and felt a more confident calling to to proclaim God’s truth. They changed their name to “Decyfer Down” and toured with groups such as Coldplay, Puddle of Mudd, Thousand Foot Krutch, Skillet and Pillar.
When describing their name and it’s meaning, Chris Clonts remarked, “I kid you not… I opened the dictionary and there’s the word decipher, We have three pages of names and I open the dictionary and find this word.”
Decipher means “to interpret.” So Decyfer Down seemed to fit perfectly to them as their focus is to interpret truth based on God’s Word. Josh Oliver adds, “We’re simply out to give a positive message of hope that has truth streaming all the way down the middle of it.”
So, on to the EP. “Crash” consists of 3 songs: “Crash,” “Best I Can,” and “Now I’m Alive.” And honestly, I like them all, a lot. I’m looking forward to the full-length album, which comes out on March or April of 2009 (at the time of this writing).
My favorite of the 3 right now is “Best I Can.” It’s a radio-friendly, rock ballad about, well, living the best you can, all while acknowledging one’s faults. I hear him calling out to God for help and support to do better, to rise above where he’s been. It’s an encouraging song. It spoke to me on many levels.
“Crash” and “Now I’m Alive” are both heavy rocks songs. The solid beats and driving guitar work will definitely get your head bouncing. Like I said before, if this is an honest preview of what’s to come, I’ll definitely be getting the album in March. I’ll probably be looking into their initial release, “End of Grey” as well.
