Christmas Music Favorites

Since the holiday season is fast approaching, I thought I would do an overview of some new and old Christmas music favorites that make the play list at our house through the holidays. I know it might be a little early yet, but hey, my kids have been known to play some of these year round. I’m going to start with a couple of new CDs that I’ve picked up this year. I’ll follow with some older favourites and then end with some other new releases that sound promising. So let’s get going!

New Christmas CDs

Rick Seaton, Ivory Angels

This CD is piano/keyboard instrumental arrangements of the classical Christmas carols. It is lively and upbeat with a new-age, jazzy feel although at times it seems to want to be background music. This isn’t necessarily bad, especially with a houseful of guests. Overall, it is a very nice collection. Rick Seaton is from the Denver area and is currently the organist at the historic Central Presbyterian Church in downtown Denver.

Absolute Favorite Christmas

This 2 CD set features many of today’s favourite Christian artists and upcoming artists. The collection has many of the classic Christmas carols and even a few new, original songs. The Christian artists include BarlowGirl, Out of Eden, Big Tent Revival, By the Tree, Jennifer Knapp, Tree63, Smalltown Poets, Michael English and OC Supertones, among many others. A couple of new discoveries for me were Inhabited and Rivertribe. Rivertribe has a Christmas CD of their own as well.

Christmas in the Vineyard

This is Christmas Carols done in the Vineyard style. If you’ve heard any of their worship music, then you know how this will sound. It’s actually one of my favorites. It’s like being in a church singing in the congregation. This one gets heavy play at our house during the holidays. It features classic Christmas carols, lead by the various Vineyard worship music leaders from the worship series CDs.

Stacie Orrico, Christmas Wish

This would be my kid’s favorite. Stacie sings 6 of her favorite Christmas songs with an R&B edge to them. It’s actually pretty good. The songs are upbeat but not so much that it seems out of place. I’m thinking Christmas TV special type of sound here, but very infectious. Stacie has an awesome voice and a great heart.

Happy Christmas, A BEC Holiday Collection: Volume 1 , Volume 2 , Volume 3

These were done by BEC Recordings and features many of the top Christian rock and alternative artists of the late 90’s and still today. Among those would be Starflyer 59, Plankeye, Five Iron Frenzy, Joy Electric, Switchfoot, OC Supertones, Seven Day Jesus, MxPx, Sixpence None the Richer, Hangnail and many others. Don’t expect classic Christmas music here. Each band puts its unique sound and twist to each Carol. It is extremely fun stuff. When you want something completely different, this is it. I love these collections.

Christmas Music Wish List

Here’s a list of some other Christmas music releases that I would like to hear:

  • WOW Christmas - WOW Hits
  • Christmas - Timeless Songs - Jaci Velasquez
  • Christmas - Rivertribe

Have a Happy Christmas and a Merry New Year!
